For record keeping purposes upset NFL picks are graded win or loss receiving the points.  ML means outright upset, "plus" (+) indicates the spread was covered.

B-RATED FREE FOOTBALL PICK

12/016/07

Jacksonville - WIN

This one will be a dog fight - they are identical teams.  Both Pittsburgh and Jacksonville are run first teams that have decent run defenses.  Both have injury situations, Jacksonville's, with Stroud and Peterson are of a bit more concern, otherwise we would have considered this an A play. Situation wise it seems teams coming off New England have a bit of a letdown, as they have a losing record ATS... and the Jags tend to "play-up" as road dog. These teams are almost mirror images of one another, and we expect it will be a lower scoring affair decided by a FG either way. We'll hit the Jags on the Money Line as are underdog pick of the week.

Pittsburgh - Loss

This may be the toughest opponent the Patriots will face this year, and we're getting double digits. Pittsburgh can run the ball, and they can stop the run, two primary ingredients for winning on the road. QB Roethlisberger is savvy in the pocket and will know how to attack the weak spot under under pressure. The New England Moss connection has cooled off in recent weeks, and the Patriots don't have a reliable running game to fall back on if the pass attack falters. We expect this to be a hard fought contest, and the final outcome to be decided by a FG either way.

Jacksonville - WON

Yes, we're going to ride them even after the thumping they took at New Orleans last week. They get a rematch at Tennessee, and we think they may outright win the game. The Titans don't have the over the top pass attack the Saints have. The Jags will stack the box and make Young throw the ball.  On the other side Garrard practiced this week and looks good to start. This one shapes up to be a lower scoring game decided by a
FG, and we expect it will be decided in the final 2 minutes.

Jacksonville - Loss

New Orleans starting center is out and Jacksonville has the kind of defense which can take advantage of that.  Jaguars solid overall defense will slow down Saint's recently surging offense.  On the other side don't see New Orleans containing the Jags rush attack.  Jaguars could outright win this one.

St. Louis - Loss

The Rams offensive line is still a mess. But they're playing at home, which will help, and the Browns don't have an over powering defensive line that can take advantage of this weakness.  Cleveland is favored on the road in a dome... yeah they're off a bye but HC Crennel isn't the kind of coach that takes advantage of that.  St. Louis will be able to move the ball against this defense.  We see this as a higher scoring affair, with the home team prevailing in a shootout. We'll call a straight-up 3 point win.

B-RATED FOOTBALL PICKS

Houston - Win (+)

Vince Young is listed as day-to-day, which means he's likely not to play.  In that case this pick is a slam dunk.  Even if VY is on the field is mobility will be limited.  Houston, despite playing without WR Andre Johnson, can move the ball over the top against this secondary.  The Houston defense has been solid against the run, and that will force Tennessee out of it's game plan.  This will be a close game, but in the end we like Houston to outright win.

B-RATED FREE FOOTBALL PICK

Washington - Win (+)

Nice match-ups here for the Redskins. The Pack lack a rushing game and have been doing it through the air. The GB defense is solid in the secondary and on the edges, but soft up the gut.  Washington's defense has found a pass rush this year, and the secondary is very good. They have athleticism at the safety positions and look to extend Favre's interception record. Washington's bread and butter is the power rushing game, and that is Green Bay's defensive weakness.  The fundamental match-ups favor the visitor, and our call is Washington outright wins this one.

B-RATED FREE FOOTBALL PICK

Tampa Bay - Loss

This could potentially be a let down spot for either team. Both squads will be without key starters.  Indy has more talent, but some of that talent will be on the sidelines for this one.  The loss of T Petitgout hurts, but having a mobile QB helps.  TB may actually be better off with Cadillac on the sidelines....  The Bucs should be able to run the ball up the middle. We don't see either side having they're way over the top.  Our scorecasting model indicates the Bucs will lose by 7, however, we won't be surprised if Tampa gives the Colts a good contest. Our call is this one will be decided by single digits, and won't be surprised if Tampa out right wins.

B-RATED FREE FOOTBALL PICKS

San Francisco - Loss

This has been a tough draw for Seattle in recent seasons.  Seattle is not clicking yet on offense, and RB Alexander appears to be running timidly.  On the other side San Francisco has played smash mouth with the Seahawks the past two years. The Niners should be able to run the ball against this defensive front. Nolan knows how to slow down the Seattle attack, and he won't put his QB in a position where he'll have to play from behind.  We like the Niners to outright win in this spot.

NY Giants - WIN (ML)

The Giants come in 0-2 with their backs to the wall, yet confident they can compete because they dominated the Skins in their match-ups last year.  Washington is off two tight games in a row, and off a Monday Night upset at Philadelphia.  The Skins are minus two starters on the right side of the line, they may have trouble establishing the run.  NY has been vulnerable over the top, but Washington does not have a strong pass attack.  We think this one will be decided by a FG, and won't be surprised if the Giants win straight-up.

Arizona - WIN (ML)

The Cards traditionally play the Seahawks well at home, and Seattle doesn't travel well. We considered Tampa Bay for our NFL upset pick of the week, but determined the Cardinals have the better opportunity for an outright win.

Atlanta - Loss

Yes you are reading that correctly - our free underdog NFL pick of the week is Atlanta - we like em to win straight up.   Our read is the dirty birds will be a better team this year with out Vick.  Joey Harrington is better than a journeyman QB, and he is familiar with the Minnesota dome. Atlanta has 3 experienced first round draft picks on their roster at the wide receiver position, and Minnesota is vulnerable over the top. Maybe this year the Falcons receivers will gain more yards receiving than their QB will rushing. On the other side the Vikings have a good pass rush, but their secondary is suspect.  Minnesota is also starting a 2nd year QB, and their receiving corps is very thin.  When a team endures the media conflict that Atlanta has they tend to bond together as a unit. We like the fundamental advantage, and situation. Our call is Atlanta outright wins the game.
